Antonio ‘Tronic’ McDonald, founder of KUAMP and industry veteran, reflects on how formulaic success can inadvertently stifle creativity
In a rapidly evolving era marked by digital innovation and boundary-pushing creativity, the role of traditional awards ceremonies continues to come under scrutiny. Can one jury of judges truly reflect the effectiveness, creativity, innovation and impact of a painstakingly crafted piece of work?

Take the recent discourse surrounding the Oscars Barbie snub - many in Hollywood jumped to the defence of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, insisting they both receive award recognition for their role in the production. And in adland, the industry recently became divided over Amazon’s Christmas commercial, “Joyride”.

In an increasingly fragmented world, creativity continues to be more subjective than ever. It has the power to unite us or separate us. With annual awards shows on the horizon, I find myself examining whether these ceremonies are still in tune with the vibrant heartbeat of true artistic achievement, or whether they are at risk of becoming predictable showcases that lean towards big budgets rather than bold ideas?

I believe we should be prioritising artistic merit over traditional metrics, and call for a paradigm shift in how we recognise and celebrate creativity in advertising and filmmaking. This is not a critique of the past but a call to embrace a more inclusive and forward-thinking future where creativity is celebrated in all its authentic forms

Instead of discouraging risks and exploration, let’s shift towards celebrating the authentic and the innovative. Let’s challenge the status quo, foster environments that nurture groundbreaking work and embrace uncharted territories. In 2024, we - the ones behind the camera, writing the scripts, crafting the creative - should consider the ever-expanding scope of creativity to be an opportunity for further transformation and adaptation.

Here’s how we can diverge conventional formulas and let creativity flourish...

1. Challenge the Status Quo

If we can resist the temptation to adhere to established formulas for success in filmmaking, the creative will undoubtedly be much more compelling. I urge creatives to break away from traditional storytelling arcs and explore unconventional narrative structures – this will breathe new life into our films.

2. Courage over Comfort

Embrace risk-taking by venturing into uncharted territories, even if it means facing uncertainty. Rather than conforming to safe, formulaic plots, the bolder the storytelling, the more thought provoking and emotionally evocative the outcome.

3. Stay True to Your Vision

We all know that initial ideas often get remixed throughout the creative process, but preserving creative integrity should remain paramount. No matter what, we must prioritise authenticity by staying true to our own unique creative voice. We can do this by drawing inspiration from our own personal experiences, infusing our films with depth and sincerity, rather than relying solely on market trends.

4. Seek Diverse Perspectives

This fourth and final point is a guiding light for all productions we take on at KUAMP. Collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines will dramatically transform the filmmaking process, infusing the creative with fresh ideas and perspectives. When we embrace collective creativity and foster an environment of open communication and collaboration, all team members will feel empowered to contribute creatively to the project.

There is a growing awareness that traditional ceremonies may perpetuate a lack of diversity and inclusivity, both in the projects recognised and the talent acknowledged. I urge the industry to redefine its criteria for success, a broader spectrum of voices to be heard and celebrated. In a world that increasingly values authenticity and representation, it is crucial for awards culture to evolve and reflect the diversity of creative expression.

By challenging conventional formulas, embracing risk-taking, cultivating authenticity, and forging collaborative partnerships, I truly believe we can break free from the constraints of formulaic success and unleash groundbreaking creativity to create truly innovative and impactful experiences.
