Y&R New Moments New Ideas, announced today that its agency in Macedonia was awarded a Titanium Lion for a government peace initiative, “10 Meters Apart,” promoting understanding between Christians and Muslims in the war-torn nation. Cannes only awards a select number of Titaniums each year for ideas that are truly ground-breaking.
“10 Meters Apart” was created by Y&R New Moments New Ideas (Y&R/NMNI), Y&R’s agency in Macedonia. Inspired by a temple in remote village in Macedonia that is used by both Christians and Muslims, Y&R/NMNI convinced official representatives of both religions to do a joint prayer in the same place. It was the first time that these two religions joined together in a public forum and was a remarkable symbolic “détente.” As a result, there is now an initiative in Parliament to recognize a day as a national day of joint prayer.
“This is an enormous moment,” said Tony Granger, Global Chief Creative Officer of Y&R. “As creative people, there can be no greater gratification than using our skills to have this kind of transformative effect on the lives of people. Like every piece of great advertising, it starts from a simple truth and persuades with an unexpected, innovative idea. I am so proud of Dushan Drakalski, ECD of Macedonia; Sasho Penev, CEO of the Macedonia, and Zarko and Lazar Sakan, the brothers who lead the NMNI/Y&R Balkan network . This is a triumph they share with the government and people of Macedonia.”
Stated Zarko Sakan, “our late father, Dragan Sakan, created this agency in 2001 because he believed that passionate creative people could help reunify the region. As part of the global Y&R network for the past 6 years, we have continued to build and grow. This award gives me great professional pride, but has even more personal significance to me, as we are helping to bring to life our father’s hope for driving peace in the region.” “This is a wonderful first step,” Lazar Sarkan added.
Y&R/NMNI is the most awarded creative agency in the region with offices in 9 markets: Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia + Herzogovina, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Montenegro.
