Homegrown TBD Post establishes themselves as powerhouse post facility in Austin, Texas
Nestled within Texas’ uber cool state capital is TBD Post, one of Austin’s biggest purpose-built post facilities. Hailing from a marriage of high calibre colour grading and editing, Ted Griffis and Brandon Thomas’ post house has grown from a humble offering into a full-service post facility in just five years.

Already, TBD has worked on commercials for some of the world’s biggest brands, from Mazda and Dell, to Amex and IBM, as well as broadcasters including PBS, Discovery, ESPN and A&E. Recently, the post house picked up coveted AICE nominations and saw four feature films, all finished at TBD, screen at SXSW this past spring.

Ted and Brandon founded TBD in 2012. The name is not, as you might expect, a combination of their initials but an acronym; To Be Determined - a tongue-in-cheek nod to the undetermined results of the company naming brainstorm, and well, the often undetermined nature of post production.

“We used to work independently, myself as a DIT and editor and Brandon as a VFX Artist and colourist. We got to talking over dinner in Austin one evening and realised our skills complemented each other very well. We started collaborating on campaigns and it became clear we shared a similar commitment to creativity, quality, and most importantly, a relentless dedication to our clients.  We were both ambitious to do something bigger than ourselves, so we decided to go for it and TBD Post was born.”

‘Mazda – Drive Together’, edited by Ted Griffis for Antidote UK and Team Cosmo was nominated for two 2017 AICE Awards.

When delving into the history of TBD, Ted and Brandon explain that they were always striving to make the creative process as fluid as possible and were constantly adding new tools and talent to help facilitate project needs.
“We were finding that when clients came to us for one thing, such as editing, they would then take advantage of our other services like colour, and then vfx.  Over the years we have wanted to offer more, which is why adding audio post was the next natural step.” says Brandon.

Oklahoma Natural Gas, edited by Catie Cacci is the first of many where TBD provided edit, mix, colour, and finish at their new facility.

TBD’s triple-headed, full-service post production offering for film, broadcast and commercial is unique for the area but, like their East and West Coast equivalents, the facility provides all three at an extremely high quality. However, what makes it stand out from the industry hubs on its coastal flanks is its laid-back, friendly charm. There’s an essence of ease and creative freedom that comes inherent to industry professionals outside the hustle of New York and Los Angeles.

TBD Post’s new facility provides high end creative editorial, VO/ADR, audio mixing, colour and finishing, and data lab services.

Having recently expanded, TBD’s new 6000sq ft facility, located just a few minutes from downtown has been a passion project for Ted and Brandon, who have designed the new offices to handle the changing needs of filmmakers, agencies, and production companies alike.

“We’re particularly excited about the theatres we have built into our new space,” says Brandon. “Colour has always been a large part of our offering, but it’s had a big upgrade and it’s exciting to now be able to offer audio alongside it. The colour and sound mixing theatres are fully equipped with Dolby Atmos surround sound and Barco cinema projection. Whilst this is an obvious asset when working on television and cinema, it’s something we can also offer our commercial clients. Viewing content in this way provides a fully calibrated creative environment for both picture and sound.”

TBD recently completed the sound mix for this commercial in their new facility. Dodge - Born this way | Brotherhood of Muscle part 2 (Sound Mixer: Dusty Albertz)

Sound supervisor and re-recording mixer Brad Engleking, (Sin City 2, Predators, From Dusk Till Dawn-TV) helps lead the new audio department as Sound Director.  Also joining the sound team is Dusty Albertz who has a tremendous amount of experience recording and mixing for national and regional commercials.

Built with clients in mind, TBD now also has seven comfortable suites, production offices, a conference room, an open lounge, and a full bar with local beer and coffee on draught. The founders tell us good coffee, tacos and whiskey are staples.

“Fostering client relationships is paramount in this industry. We hope our new offices will provide a relaxing environment where both talent and clients can nourish their creativity,” adds Ted. “I’d like to think Austin would be a breath of fresh air for those working with us from across the States and abroad. There’s an amazing creative energy here, not to mention incredible music and film scenes - and so much good food.”

Thanks to the commercial and cultural draws of the city, there’s a lot of talent flocking to Austin. Ted concludes, “I’m fortunate to say we’ve been able to build a talented team at TBD who really love what they do and who are dedicated to producing the best work possible.”

Yeti “Tootsie”, about an 80 year old BBQ pit master was edited by Catie Cacci and won a 2016 Addy Award.
