German brand launches spot filled with visual magic and heartfelt storytelling

With a surreal film directed by Los York’s Ergin Kuke and Seth Epstein, German website builder Jimdo celebrates the trials and triumphs of entrepreneurs. Captivating the viewer with visual magic and heartfelt storytelling, the ninety second spot announces Jimdo’s new small business grant program, with work breaking this week across TV, digital, social, and print platforms. Los York worked in close collaboration with Jimdo to helm the spot from shoot to delivery, tasked with capturing the brands core values of empowerment and creativity with a strong visual and storytelling identity. 

The ad sees the everyday realities of self-employment brought to life with magical realism, visualizing the intangible magic of entrepreneurship on screen. From one fantastical moment to the next, the film links together nine different vignettes in a seamless flow. Epstein and Kuke accomplish the effortless, relay race handoffs with clever camera movements and an impressive array of visual styles, including photoreal CG flowers, an explosive cel animated chef, a multiplying seamstress, illustrated dragons that come to life, and a levitating life coach. 

Requiring a heavy mixed media approach, Kuke tapped into his wealth of experience with VFX and CG, masterfully blending cinematic footage with distinct design and post production techniques.

Says Kuke: “The idea was twofold: use a seamless flow to show that small business owners are all around, in every walk of life, and use moments of magical realism to express the individuality of each Jimdo user. Those moments were as subtle as a shoemaker casually reaching into his monitor to drop a shoe onto his website, or as exaggerated as a chef exploding into a cartoon version of himself.” 

“This campaign was the perfect opportunity to lean into our end to end capabilities, and flex our ability to execute world class production on a global scale,” says Los York managing director and partner Melina Osornio-Andradae. “We filmed with an incredible crew in Mexico City and worked with talented artists from around the world to create the distinctive visual style you see in the final spot. We not only created a truly special campaign, but also planted a flag for Los York as a nimble problem-solving creative studio uniquely equipped to meet the needs of the world’s most innovative brands.” 

The partnership marks Los York’s continued expansion as a hybrid creative production shop, following recent work with leading brands that include Logitech, Spotify, Waymo Workrise, Comcast, and Motorola.
