DDB Voltage together with Volkswagen unveiled a smart and powerful out-of-home campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. Leveraging the power of visual storytelling, this thought-provoking campaign aims to make a profound impact on individuals, urging them to prioritise safety on the roads.

The ‘Missing Messages’ campaign owns the iconic “typing” graphic element commonly seen in smartphone text messages apps interfaces. These animated bubbles move as if someone is typing but never actually send the message.

The carefully crafted imagery, captured by Frederic Schlosser, effectively highlights the potentially silent devastating consequences of distracted driving. By juxtaposing the anticipation of receiving a text message with the dangerous act of texting while driving, the advertisement drives home a powerful message about the importance of responsible behaviour behind the wheels.

“Our goal with this campaign was to make a lasting impression on drivers and encourage them to think twice before picking up their phones while driving,” said Heitor Buchalla, creative director at DDB Voltage. “Through a visually striking representation of messages which have never gone through, we hope to spark a conversation and ultimately change behaviour when it comes to distracted driving.” The out-of-home campaign ran in Berlin, Germany during the month of April, the Distracted Driving Awareness month, reaching more than 13.000 viewers daily. Since a German regulation prohibits out-of-home pieces to have complex animations to not distract drivers, the simple and iconic typing bubbles animation was the perfect solution to amplify the message’s reach and encourage widespread adoption of safe driving behaviour, with a particular focus on the dangers associated with texting while behind the wheel.
