Viewers can experience the event via avatar in a virtual 3D web-based environment, complete with fantastical worlds and daring challenges

Capturing more than 83 millions streams in 2020, The Game Awards is one of the video game industry’s biggest annual events, drawing viewers on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. This year’s event, taking place December 9, will debut a new streaming experience for fans, designed and produced by creative digital experiences agency Active Theory’s Dreamwave Platform, which specialises in building digital meeting places, or microverses, for brands.

During The Game Awards, which will kick off on Thursday, December 9 at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT, an immersive 3D “microverse” watch party will open to fans to create avatars, explore the environment and hang out with others while watching the stream. On arrival at The Game Awards microverse, users will enter a welcome room to customize their avatars and acclimate to the controls that will guide the experience. From there, a portal will emerge to a different dimension: an abstract realm of floating planets, ancient giants and explorable terrain. Once in the main environment, users can explore the alternative world while also watching the livestream. Gamified challenges are also embedded for attendees with the skills to unlock exclusive rooms, features and customizations for their avatars.

“Right now, there’s a lot of discussion around how the metaverse is evolving and much of the innovation involves gaming, so it makes perfect sense to directly involve fans at The Game Awards,” said Andy Thelander, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Dreamwave. “The microverse environments we create have gamified elements such as world building and exploration, making the community of The Game Awards the perfect audience to be exploring the space.”

"Earlier this year I attended Secret Sky in DreamWave and was impressed with Active Theory's no-friction platform to bring communities together,” said Geoff Keighley, creator, executive producer and host of The Game Awards. “As we continue to build The Game Awards, we are excited to explore ways to bring interactivity and community around our livestream."

Created using Active Theory’s Dreamwave Platform, which previously hosted events such as Porter Robinson’s Secret Sky, Xbox’s Anniversary Museum and Cardano Summit 2021, The Game Awards microverse experience will be available to all, with or without VR headsets, via the web on mobile and desktop devices at thegameawards.dreamwave.live as the show streams live December 9, beginning with the pre-show kicking off at 7:30 PM ET / 4:30 PM PT..
