Toronto-based multiplatform team Fathom Film Group, in collaboration with digital production and design agency Jam3, are pleased to announce the launch of THE DEFECTOR: ESCAPE FROM NORTH KOREA Interactive Experience. This online web doc takes users inside the gripping reality of living in North Korea today, and allows them to experience first-hand the brave attempts of those attempting to escape.
The online experience is being launched as a complement for the upcoming film THE DEFECTOR: ESCAPE FROM NORTH KOREA, and is based on the true stories of six North Korean defectors. Their stories intertwine to create a gripping virtual journey where the user controls the fate of a defector desperately attempting to escape the country. The first-person point-of-view journey begins in a hostile North Korea, and continues through China and South-East Asia, where decision-making points and panoramic 360° hotspot locations allow users to access video content, insider information and additional images. The environment is virtual, but the stakes are high.
“It’s a much more intimate telling of a story, that lets you ‘choose your own adventure’ as the story unfolds,” said Ann Shin, Producer and Director at Fathom Film Group. “This immersive online experience really puts the user in the shoes of a defector.”
"We found interactive storytelling to be the most innovative and effective way to bring the true essence of this film to people before they have the chance to see the film in its entirety," remarked Adrian Belina, Partner & Creative Director at Jam3. "We wanted to truly evoke emotion in people and get them as close to the experience as those attempting to escape North Korea.”
