K48’s Barbara Guieu tells us about the creatives who most inspire her to keep making cool stuff
“Above all, I think that, creatively speaking, fashion and design are more inspiring than other fields here in Italy,” says Barbara Guieu. And we’re inclined to believe her. As executive producer at Milan production company K48 she’s been involved in making some very cool films for some very cool brands, from Nike to Givenchy to IKEA. So we invited her to wax lyrical about some of the Italians who most inspire here. Hopefully they’ll spark something in you too.

Alessandro Michele

Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, has done an excellent job in terms of brand awareness. He relaunched the brand and in three years doubled its revenues.

He had no fear and established his vision on the brand without compromises.

The last campaign Gucci did for Gucci Beauty reflects what I'm saying.

Since he became creative director of the brand he started working on his vision in 360°. He changed everything from collections of course to the interior design of Gucci shops, from art direction of fashion shows to advertising campaigns and models. He understood and appreciated the historical codes of the brand and combined it with his contemporary vision and sensibility.

What I like most about his work is that he's been able to create a contemporary narrative and visual tale by looking back to historical icons.

Alessia Glaviano

Alessia Glaviano is the senior photo editor of Vogue Italia and L'Uomo Vogue and brand visual director of Vogue.it. She's from Palermo, which is one of the most beautiful, creative and inspiring cities in Italy. Her father was a great Italian fashion photographer Marco Glaviano and her great uncle was one of the most important Italian artists of the Futurist school.

She created PhotoVogue, an innovative online platform where users can share their own photographs under the curatorial supervision of professional photo editors. In addition to this, I think she's one of the most important talent scouts in Italy, not only for young photographers but also for video makers and directors.

She curated video-interview series Vogue Masters, for the website version of Vogue Italia, also broadcast on the Italian Sky Arte channel. She is also responsible for the artistic direction of events and exhibitions for Vogue Italia and L’Uomo Vogue.

Her Instagram channel is very interesting and useful.

Studiopepe

Studiopepe is a design agency founded in Milan in 2006 by Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto. Studiopepe focuses on design and research with a multidisciplinary approach, offering creative consulting services. They develop creative concepts for fashion and design brands, design interiors for private and retail clients and create product collections for both companies and art galleries, drawing on eclectic design idioms that combine poetic vision with rigorous design.

Art, installations, study of formal archetypes, experimentation with materials and dialogue between opposites are only a few of the themes developed by the studio.

Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto, both designers with a background in fine art are the creative directors of Studiopepe and coordinate a team of architects, interior designers, product designers and stylists. Together they come up with concepts and designs of great emotional power.

During the last Salone del Mobile in Milan they came out with a brilliant exhibition titled The Arcanistes that was not only beautiful but also clever.

There are a lot of cool talents here in Italy, and I'm glad that I have the chance to work with such cool creatives, cool agencies and cool directors, but sometimes I think we should be more proud of what we are. Maybe we pay too much attention of what is happening outside, rather than building a strong Italian identity.
