The Sticker Studios team reflect on the event

Last week Sticker Studios celebrated International Women’s Day with another Bi-monthly WOMEN IN FILM Screening.

This night started as an initiative to give creative women in the industry a platform to showcase and meet people from across the industry. Another beautiful night full of love, vulnerability and great work!

It was our pleasure this month to join forces with Electric Theatre Collective, one of the most creative and awarded post-houses in London!

With our founder, Harleymoon Kemp away, the evening was hosted by honouree Sticker producer, the amazing talent that is Nailah Blisset (who also we were privilege to have as guest last year).

Our first speaker was Andi Chu, colourist at ETC took us through her journey to becoming one of the most sought-after professionals in her field. Starting as a runner, she shared insights into her early career experiences, highlighting the invaluable mentorship she received. Despite mastering her craft, she encountered the challenges of being one of the few female colourists in London, the pressures of competition with other females and the complexities of tokenism.

Alena Shevchenko, a comedy director known for her unique female-centric storytelling approach, brought laughter to the audience with her short film "Sorry I'm Late, I Was Masturbating." Addressing themes of relationships, sexuality, and humour, Alena emphasised the importance of breaking taboos surrounding bold feminine visuals, recounting instances where even supposedly progressive spaces like Berlin presented unexpected hurdles.

Established set designer Addi Van Zyl gave us an insight of her move from South Africa to London and having to start all over again. She came to the UK having to create a whole new contact book, and it was coming to events like Women in Film and the power of Insta where she could navigate the big smoke. Having shown works including brands for Coca-Cola, Nespresso and Azo, she creates amazing sets with ingenious solutions, from painting coffee beans to creating a gym set in the middle of a tower block office, Addi is definitely a Set Designer to watch for.

Thea and Cecilia closed the show with their amazing story of their rebellious nature drawing each other together. Going against the grain, Thea and Cecilia created work outside of their uni projects and as a result they had a portfolio that would be different from the rest. Their gig at UNCOMMON has also led them to make amazing work for 'ITV's Britain Get Talking’ and Wagamama's.

We’d love to thank again everyone who came to WOMEN IN FILM, contributing to yet another unforgettable evening celebrating creativity and empowerment.
