Coomber’s films are characterised by intimate storytelling & a strong cinematic sensibility

Squire – the creative content studio that focuses on the intersection of advertising, broadcast and music – can today announce the signing of its tenth director: Michelle Coomber.

Coomber is an award-winning documentary and commercials director who joins Squire to exploit the burgeoning content opportunities that straddle both disciplines. She has previously worked through Passion Pictures and Cowboy.

In between working with Kevin Macdonald on the film ‘Marley’ and currently being in production on a Margaret Thatcher documentary called ‘Generation Right’, Coomber has been busy applying her documentary aesthetic to campaigns like Philips 'Vision 2015' for DDB and Carbon City for UNEP.

Coomber’s films are characterised by intimate storytelling and a strong cinematic sensibility.

She discovered a natural flair for directing whilst studying a documentary module during her Cultural Studies Masters at Goldsmiths. Her early directing career focused on human rights documentaries, largely funded by prestigious grants from organisations such as the Wellcome Trust.

Some of Coomber’s award-winning documentary highlights include: ‘Child Denied’ (revealing the hidden world of forced sterilisation in the Czech Republic) which was screened globally by CNN, RTP and Al Jazeera; ‘Lost Every Day’ (studying the neuroscience of navigation) as featured by the New York Times and screened at SXSW; and ‘Buriganga’ (a poetic film about Bangladeshis’ connection with the eponymous river).

Squire’s executive producer, Phil Tidy, said: “Michelle is an incredibly talented individual. She’s dripping in film awards and nominations – and rightly so! Her diverse skills, from documentaries to commercials and production to directing, make her the perfect choice for Squire and our mission to join the content dots between advertising, broadcast and music.”

Michelle Coomber added: “I’m thrilled to have found a new home in Squire. They feel like the ideal company to help me get more involved in projects that straddle both content marketing and documentary directing. I’ve already worked with Phil Tidy and the gang on an interesting content project for Armenia… and I’m looking forward to many more.”
