Wash teams up with Group Thrpy and director Ruth Hogben on captivating commercial

A truly magical campaign for megastar Ariana Grande, spiraling through her dreams, is launching her new brand, r.e.m.beauty. 

Wash worked closely with Group Thrpy and director Ruth Hogben in the grade to achieve a captivating, silver and metallic look that was in harmony with the other-worldly concept of the piece. 

Naturally for a project of this scale, there were a lot of collaborators in different timezones, all pitching in and bringing their A-game. Wash worked through the grade using live stream sessions and lots of video calls, whilst Ruth was able to attend Wash in person. 

Ariana is seen in multiple stunning setups, always putting her stamp (literally) on every scene. 

Colourist Caroline Morin said of the project: “When I first saw an early edit, I couldn’t help but let out an excited scream. The concept and direction Ruth and Ariana took was so unique for a beauty brand launch, full of atmosphere and dreamy VFX, so I immediately knew this would be something special to be involved in.

Ruth had a lot of ideas in terms of looks and we managed to explore and play around with all the different setups. It was really interesting for me to compare what came to mind initially from seeing the edit to what Ruth wanted for this piece.  I loved working collaboratively to develop a grade that felt true to the brand identity of vintage space, but also worked well as a beauty campaign. I’m so proud of how the final film turned out; seeing everything come together was quite amazing.”

Director Ruth Hogben added: "The film really came to life when we started the grade process. The r.e.m. team loved the way we were able to shape the creative direction in the grade. Caroline’s refined eye played a huge part in creating such an iconic launch for r.e.m.”
