Speedshape's Lexus Dark Ride Wins 2010 Favorite Website Awards People's Choice
Venice, CA - The FWA (Favorite Website Awards) announced the winners for this year's annual competitions and Lexus Dark Ride takes home the prize for the FWA People's Choice Award for 2010. The FWA bestows two annual winners, one of which is voted on by the people (People’s Choice) and the other which is judged by a panel of industry experts. The FWA contest consists of one year long global competition, 44+ million site visits, 365 FWA Site of the Day winners, 12 FWA Site of the Month finalists, one FWA international public vote and only one FWA People's Choice Award winner.
“I was delighted to see Lexus – Dark Ride win the PCA as it was one of my favourite sites of the year," says FWA Founder Rob Ford. "When I first experienced this site I was blown away by the production quality and the levels of interaction for a film. The Facebook and webcam integration really took this to a whole new level. I was totally engrossed until the very end and immediately shared the link with my close associates, which is something I rarely do these days. This project truly shows the power of the web and how, using the latest technologies, a huge idea can become a seamless reality experience. Hats off to the entire team on this one, the public voted in their thousands and I fully agree with them.”
Lexus Dark Ride is an epic thrilling action packed 12:30 interactive film collaboration including Speedshape, NYC-based agency Skinny and Stink Digital. Shot in 4K using a RED® digital camera, Dark Ride features a first of its kind, premium compact hybrid, Lexus CT 200h (released early 2011) and an idea that brings to life a unique "film-meets-gaming" experience combining high quality live-action film production with supreme interactive technology. Users are able to experience a test drive like no other while sitting shotgun in a co-starring role, have access to control the camera's POV thru "pannable" sequences, record dialogue lines and the ability to impact the outcome of the film, allowing for an immersive depth to the narrative.
Speesdshape VFX Supervisor, Connor Meechan states, "I am very proud of what our team accomplished on Dark Ride. 186 VFX shots in 8 weeks — including full exterior vehicle replacement and 210 degree field of view interior compositing— really put our bullet-proof pipeline to the test. We were able to develop some new tools and techniques to push the experience and level of quality another notch forward. Collaborating with such talented, production, interactive, and creative people almost always results in success. It’s especially rewarding to be recognized by “the people” for all of our hard work."
