Directing collective and production company Strike Anywhere helps to launch the newest product for the popular magazine application Flipboard with its My Magazine campaign. This third generation of Flipboard includes a key new feature—Topics—that will help the magazines find the audiences they deserve. Search for a topic of interest, and the results will include content from magazines curated by people passionate about that subject. In other words: magazine makers will move into the spotlight on Flipboard as never before.
Strike Anywhere worked directly with Flipboard’s in-house creative team to develop and execute the campaign, designing a concept that highlights 3 of Flipboard’s magazine makers and creates a visual storytelling experience centered around their passions and professions and how they inspire others through their work.
The goal was to create cinematic documentary pieces that were concise but also showcase the broad reach of the product. To achieve this, Strike Anywhere decided to shoot a one-take pull-back shot revealing the silhouette of each subject and have their stories - which feature a mix of still photographs, videos, and graphic design elements- composited onto their silhouettes. Strike Anywhere filmed these one-shot silhouettes in slow motion, using a monochromatic RED Dragon camera on a motion control system timed out to length of each spot. The spots then culminate with a full reveal of each real-life subject as they introduce themselves and their Flipboard magazine to the audience.
The My Magazine spots feature singer/songwriter Carolyn Malachi, astronaut/educator Leland Melvin, and surfer/journalist Steve Hawk. In each piece, Strike Anywhere crafts affecting and inspiring living portraits to acquaint viewers with the world-bettering vocations of Flipboard’s magazine community.
