Due for release soon, 'Wildflower' tells the story of a child caring for her mentally disabled parents

As of December 2021, Matt Smukler is once again available for new advertising projects. Previously, he had the chance to direct a feature-length film based on his documentary 'Wildflower.' The documentary tells the touching story about Matt’s niece Christina who cares for and raises her mentally disabled parents.

At the beginning of his work as a director, Matt focused mainly on comedic content, but he quickly developed into one of the most sought-after emotional storytellers in advertising. Now he loves blending both worlds and has been heard saying, “You can’t have tears without the smiles!”

Over the course of his career, Matt has directed commercials for McDonalds, Mini, Telekom and Toyota, to name just a few brands. Additionally, he has won several Cannes Lions, DN&D gold and silver awards, and his commercials have been recognised in the One Show as well as countless other celebrated award shows. He was nominated for the Best Direction award at the AICP Awards as well as receiving an Emmy nomination for his work on Cheerios.

Matt just finished principal photography on his coming-of-age feature film dramady, 'Wildflower.' The film follows Bea Johnson as she copes with life, an intellectually disabled parent, and an extended family that never quite agrees on how best to handle the situation.

A true star cast was assembled for this film. Jean Smart, who just won her fourth career Emmy award, Jacki Weaver, Kiernan Shipka, Alexandra Daddario, Dash Mihok, Charlie Plummer and Reid Scott. Financial support is provided by Limelight and eOne.

Sometime in 2022 we can look forward to a movie full of laughter and tears in typical Matt fashion.

On the subject of family, Matt has already produced several commercials, for example the spot for 'Hershey', which we would like to show here to get a feeling for Matt's interpretations. Additionally, Telekom’s 'Teenage Love' was one of the many films over the year which emphasises the long time relationship with Soup Film.
