Sony/ATV’s Cardi B Wins Top ASCAP Songwriter Award

Sony/ATV songwriter Cardi B was named Songwriter of the Year at this year’s ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. The New Yorker received the prestigious honor for the first time at the 34th annual event held in Los Angeles after six of her songs won individual performance awards. These were given for 'Bartier Cardi,' 'Bodak Yellow,' 'Finesse' (Remix), 'I Like It,' 'Motorsport' and 'No Limit.'

Among the other Sony/ATV songwriters winning multiple awards were Matthew Burnett and Jordan DC Evans who were both recognised for co-writing the Daniel Caesar hits 'Best Part' (featuring H.E.R.) and 'Get You.' Boi-1da also won two awards, for the Drake hit 'God’s Plan' and for 'No Limit,' which was recorded by G-Eazy featuring A$AP Rocky and Cardi B.

The Drake hit 'Nice For What' was Top Rap Song and 'Won’t He Do It' was Top Gospel Song. Both are co-published by Sony/ATV.

There were also a series of special awards presented during the evening, including one to Motown’s legendary founder Berry Gordy and its current President Ethiopia Habtemariam who jointly accepted the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award. They received the award from ASCAP President Paul Williams and celebrated Motown songwriter Valerie Simpson. Sony/ATV looks after the historic Jobete catalog of Motown songs.

Sony/ATV songwriter T.I. became the first ever recipient of the ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award, which was presented to him by political commentator, analyst and advocate Angela Rye.
