It was a joy to be involved in crafting the score for this year’s Aldi Christmas Advert. Who doesn’t love Kevin and his annual festive hi-jinx?
Once the creative direction was decided - a re-imagining of the score from ‘Elf’ - it was time for our composers to look at the recording process and what better place to give Kevin the pedestal he deserved than Abbey Road Studios!
Studio One at Abbey Road is the world’s largest recording space. It’s been home to scores including ‘The Lord of The Rings’ Trilogy, ‘The Return of the Jedi’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Avengers: End Game.’ Stevie Wonder, Harry Styles and U2 have also recorded there.
But the question on everyone’s lips… was it ready for its biggest star yet?
Watching some of the best classical musicians in the country perform John Debny’s legendary score was breathtaking, only marginally eclipsed by the choir boy tittering at the snowman joke at the end.
The final result was epic, and though the small screen may not always do justice to the huge sound that was captured that day, the music’s magic and sparkle makes it impossible to come away feeling anything other than warm and giddy.
