BLUT Audio's head of production, Michael Robb, looks to the music scene that shaped him and enlists the help of Australia Music Prize winning producer and beatmaker, Sensible J

I wanted to create a playlist about the vibrant music scene that shaped me… the one and only always-on-the-go scene of Melbourne, Australia. However, as I haven’t lived there for around 14 years, I decided to enlist the help of my old friend and former bandmate, Sensible J.

A lot of people in ad music don’t necessarily start there. After tearing up Melbourne pubs and clubs with our in-the-pocket neo soul tunes, we both got into music production. After a few wrong turns and a move to Germany, I started producing tracks for moving images and the rest is history. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Sensible J came up in the Oz Soul Collective, creating showcases which were breeding grounds for artists such as Nai from Hiatus Kaiyote, Remi & Cool Out Sun. Since then he’s gone on to produce a range of artists (e.g. Sampa The Great, Cool Out Sun, Ladi6) and has also landed syncs and testimonials for the likes of Champion and Powerade.

Trading music adds a certain depth to friendships and I really enjoyed the exchange in putting this together with Sensible J and hearing what’s currently turning heads in Melbourne. I hope you do too!
