Some might say there has been a resurgence of Lovers Rock in recent times, the brilliant Steve Mcqueen film that shared the genre's name transported you to a time and a place where its sultry melodies and romantic style was king or perhaps more pertinently queen of the dance.
Since watching that film and as a substitute for actually being able to be in the dance, I have had the joy of delving back through my collection into a sound and a style that has always held a special place for me.
Heavily utilising female vocalists such as Janet Kay, Louisa Marks and Caron Wheeler amongst others, Lovers is seen as a smoother, R&B-influenced form of reggae with its foundations firmly rooted in the UK.
Not needing any excuse to celebrate this much loved genre, I hope the following selection of both UK and Jamaican Lover's style puts a little dip in your hip and some glide in your stride and helps in some way to soften the heaviness of current times.
Some great compilations are out there for those with a hankering -particularly the Soul Jazz: Harmony, Melody & Style collections and For The Love Of You which was released last year on Athens Of The North.
Peace & Love
