AJ Johnson of Felt Music talks childhood classics and discovering hidden gems

A music pallet painted by the rise of the internet.

Like a lot of 90’s babies I grew up spending a lot of school day/nights sat in front of a TV set mashing buttons on a Playstation 2 controller, here’s where my love of music really started. I found myself often returning to a set of games because I loved the music choice so much. A blend of breakbeat, dub and jungle was introduced to a mini 8 year old me ranging from the likes of Fatboy Slim (big up Brighton) to Grandmaster Flash from such games as Fifastreet and SSX snowboarding.. I was hooked.

Prior to my early video-game-induced-rave-days, the school run would often involve my parents blasting classics from The Beatles or The Beach Boys and influences they had from living in Texas, which opened me to a world of catchy guitar riffs and feel good bangers, I’m glad my childhood was seasoned with such iconic music.

Fast forward a couple of years to 08 and my older brother is showing me an album his school mate had Limewire’d, it was Chase & Status - More Than A lot. This turned a switch, a pathway love of underground music, production, DJing & raves, so..thanks bro.

An early interest of underground music proved pretty useful growing up, being the go-to-music-kid to discuss new tunes, forget kiss chase and conkers, school breaks consisted of discussions about Skream & Benga’s Dubplate or MJ Cole's latest garage banger.

Circa 2010, and it’s the rise of Youtube channels Eton Messy, Majestic Casual and The Sound You Need. A perfect blend of a chill, future beats and hip hop are now the audio accompany to my teens. Kaytranada, Village, Lxury all producing cutting edge electronic music I had to put them in my playlist.

A big part of DJing is to discover hidden gems new talent, crate digging. I spent a lot of my teens scrolling through Soundcloud, this is exactly how I found the worldwide collective ’Soulection Radio’. A podcast/label pushing the best ‘future beats, eclectic soul & forgotten gems’. Soulection’s growth has been amazing to watch, from going to their first UK show to meeting the founders, the platform put me on to different blends of music from across the world, such as Sango, Monte Booker and Flying lotus.

Incredibly respectful of music from across the pond, UK underground music is still very much my safe haven. I feel honoured to be able to DJ, work and help run events in London, a city where electronic genres has been pioneered and musical history has been made. I’m always on the lookout for new music and events so please reach out!
