Hard-hitting and heart warming campaigns bring home the gold

Winners of the 2023 Webby Awards have been announced with Publicis Groupe Benelux and Boomerang bringing home a collective five awards across two projects. Hailed by The New York Time’s as the “Internet’s highest honour”, the Webby Awards is one of the longest-running awards programmes honouring digital culture.

Publicis’ hard-hitting WikiTruth campaign for ‘Ukrainian Witness’ that disrupted the fake news narrative by the Russian media to its citizens about the Ukrainian war won three awards in the Advertising, Media & PR category for ‘Best Use of Online Media’, ‘Real-time Response’ and ‘Best Use of Online Media’ (People’s Voice Winner.) In addition, Boomerang Agency won ‘Best Influencer Endorsements’ in the Advertising, Media & PR category as well as the award for ‘Viral Marketing’ in the Video category for its heartwarming campaign ‘The Promise’ for Italian food company, Barilla.

Speaking about the WikiTruth campaign Publicis Groupe Benelux senior copywriter, Sander Bergmeijer said they were ‘extremely proud and honoured’ for the agency’s three Webby wins for the project, but added although the wins were indeed a time to celebrate, the attention of the world should ‘remain on the war in Ukraine and of course, find any way possible to help end it.’

Boomerang’s campaign win, ‘The Promise’ by Barilla saw Roger Federer keeping his 2017 promise to play tennis protégé’ Zizou, when the tennis legend surprised the young player at a staged and secret ‘training camp’ in 2022.

Senior producer Daan de Groot, said he was thrilled that their campaign had been recognised after defying the odds and weeks of bad weather to make the campaign the worldwide success it had become. ‘Four weeks of pre-production, location scouting in Zurich, putting together a team, getting 100 children on board for the crowd around the court and intense rain all finally paid off when the one-take set-up paid off, the clouds cleared and Federer and Zizou faced off. And the rest is history!”

Speaking about the agencies’ wins Claire Graves, executive director of The Webby Awards said, ‘Publicis Groupe Benelux and Boomerang have set the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet, commenting on how these awards are ‘a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators.’

Hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show) the Webby Awards’ star-studded ceremony will take place in New York City on Monday, May 15th, and will celebrate the best of the Internet. Fans can follow and watch show highlights including hallmark 5-Word Speeches from the night’s big winners on May 15th by following The Webby Awards @thewebbyawards on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and on YouTube.
