Naqqash Khalid’s debut feature IN CAMERA starring Nabhaan Rizwan (Station Eleven, Mogul Mowgli), Amir El-Masry (Limbo) and Rory Fleck Byrne (This is Going to Hurt) has wrapped after a six week shoot in Manchester, UK.

Twenty-something Aden (Nabhaan Rizwan) spends most of his time recording self-tapes for parts he never gets.  After he is sent out on a series of nightmarish commercial auditions, with rejection upon rejection, he takes it upon himself to find a new part to play.

Produced by Juliette Larthe for Prettybird who developed the script with Naqqash Khalid, and by Mary Burke for Public Dreams, IN CAMERA is financed by BBC Film, BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) and in association with Uncommon Creative Studio.  It was developed with BBC Film.

Naqqash Khalid is a writer-director.  He was selected to develop his debut feature IN CAMERA at the iFeatures Lab (supported by Creative England, BFI, BBC Film and ScreenSkills) along with producer Juliette Larthe in 2019/20.  He was a selected artist for New Creatives North (funded by Arts Council England and BBC Arts) and received a Jerwood Creative Fellowship with Manchester International Festival.  In 2020 Naqqash was named one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow.

Nabhaan Rizwan, also one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow, made his debut as the lead in the BBC/Amazon series Informer opposite Bel Powley and Paddy Considine, where he won the RTS Breakthrough Award for his unmissable performance.  Nabhaan was recently seen in HBO’s highly-anticipated drama series Industry, as well as the critically acclaimed and BIFA-nominated feature Mogul Mowgli opposite Riz Ahmed. Prior to that, Nabhaan starred alongside Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley in StudioCanal’s film The Last Letter From Your Lover for director Augustine Frizzell.  He was most recently seen in Patrick Somerville’s Station Eleven for HBO Max alongside Himesh Patel and Gael Garcia Bernal.  On stage, he recently starred in the two-hander Anna X with Emma Corrin at The Harold Pinter Theatre to rave reviews. Nabhaan is currently shooting a lead role in Charlie Covell’s Kaos alongside Jeff Goldblum for Netflix.

Amir El-Masry won a Scottish BAFTA for his performance in the film Limbo and was nominated for a British Independent Film Award.  He was named a 2020 BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and a 2021 Screen International Star of Tomorrow.  Amir debuted in the Egyptian comedy Ramadan Mabrouk Abu El Alamein Hamouda in 2008, for which he was awarded Best Movie Debut at the Egyptian Cinema Oscar Festival.  Roles followed in the films Rosewater, Lost in London and The Arabian Warrior, and he received acclaim for his performance in BBC One’s The Night Manager and Channel 4’s The State. In 2017, Amir made his stage debut in the Royal Court Theatre production of Goats.  Further TV and film credits include Age Before Beauty, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Industry and The One.   Amir has upcoming roles in the BBC drama SAS: Rogue Heroes and as the young Mohamed Al-Fayed in the fifth season of The Crown.

Producer Juliette Larthe says: “On Naqqash Khalid’s IN CAMERA, with my Producer partner Mary Burke, we got blessed by our team and the incredible support from our financiers, BBC Film, BFI and Uncommon Creative Studio with a massive shout out for BBC Film’s Eva Yates for believing in Naqqash's vision from Day One.  Naqqash Khalid is re-defining our cinema screens with his genre-smashing UK Indie First Feature film, with casting by Shaheen Baig, the screen is LIT with the glow of the exciting actors.”

Producer Mary Burke adds: “Naqqash is a radical proponent of new cinema, and with the stellar cast assembled, the film promises to deliver an absolute slap.”

Eva Yates, director of BBC Film, says: “With IN CAMERA, Naqqash Khalid has exceeded his own bold ambitions for his directorial debut, along with his brilliant producers and truly outstanding cast. Naqqash is an essential component of a thrilling growing community of new filmmakers emerging out of the UK right now.”

Kristin Irving, senior production and development executive at the BFI Film Fund, says: “We are thrilled to be part of Naqqash’s debut feature whose singular vision for the film blew us away from the start. With an incredible cast and team, the film will be playful, provocative and unlike any other.

Charlie Gatsky Sinclair, chief production officer at Uncommon, says: “Uncommon are so proud to support this unique project. The talented Khalid represents a powerful voice that the world needs to hear. Delivered by a brilliant cast; this film is destined to be a modern reference point.”
