Maybe they were thinking of the “Like a Virgin” video where Madonna writhed and cavorted on a Venice gondola.
Maybe they just wanted their annual Summer party on a barge in Kings Cross. Either way Pitch & Sync just felt it right to celebrate the 60th birthday of the icon to end all icons.
The big She. Madonna.
Without Ms Ciccone there would be no Lady Gaga. No Britney. No Scissor Sisters, we could go on but you get the point.
300 million records sold and counting is significant. But the real importance of Madonna is demonstrating, without any apology, to a global audience the importance of doing things your way regardless of what people think. Her inspiration reaches beyond music and art and into the everyday existence.
Madonna is, always was, and always will be, very bad news for misogyny and that is the real reason we salute her.
There are, also, of course, some perfect pieces of pop music at it’s absolute best. Pitch & Sync therefore let a brass band loose on a selection of her finest. “La Isla Bonita”, “Like a Prayer”, “Borderline” and a whole load more. They could have played all night and still skimmed only the surface of her catalogue. Nobody would have complained.
You were there? You weren’t there but wished you were? You were there but cannot remember? – whatever, here’s the playlist they lovingly put together.
The P&S Musical Canal Boat is the latest of many Pitch & Sync events that have been hosted throughout the past year. Following on from the success of January’s Wellness Yoga event, their collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy for the ‘Extra Large Christmas Piano Festival’ at the end of 2017 and a series of London & Berlin Festivals, which included a recent performance at Standon Calling.
