'Boogie Boogie Wonderland' is an electrifying Italiano disco-inspired narrative that blends vibrant Italian aesthetics with a hint of nostalgia and plenty of good vibes.
2D Creative proudly presents the captivating photography series, ‘Boogie Boogie Wonderland,’ by Montreal-based food photographer Virginie Gosselin. This imaginative project, created in collaboration with art director Rachel Lecompte, revives the nostalgia of Italy's disco era through a vibrant lens and recently received two prestigious awards at Applied Art 2024 in photography.

’Boogie Boogie Wonderland’ is a visual feast that transports viewers to the enchanting world of Italian grandmothers, affectionately known as nonnas, amid the splendid disco years. Infused with vibrant aesthetics and a luminous nostalgia that captures the essence of Italy's charm, Virginie and Rachel drew inspiration from social media trends like 'Pasta Grannies' and a desire to showcase hand modelling with older individuals rarely seen in food photography.

The inspiration behind this series stems from Virginie's immersive experience in Italy, where she indulged in the country's flavorful cuisine and culture. Meanwhile, Rachel Lecompte's adventures in New Zealand sparked a craving for authentic Italian tastes. Six months later, back in Montreal, the duo conceptualised ‘Boogie Boogie Wonderland’, blending Italian aesthetics with a disco-inspired narrative.

The project's creative process was marked by experimentation and innovation. Virginie and Rachel explored new techniques, playing with lighting setups to evoke the desired mood and aesthetics, whilst behind-the-scenes moments were documented in real-time, providing insights into the project's evolution and creative challenges.

Collaboration was key to the success of the project, with each team member contributing unique talents and perspectives. Unexpected challenges came when the team faced time constraints that led them to prioritise and adjust their schedule, sacrificing a shot in the process.

A personal project for Virginie to enhance her portfolio, the shoot exemplifies the importance of such endeavours for nurturing creativity and refining artistic identity.
