DeAL (Device Act Lab.), an internal incubation program at HAKUHODO UNIV., the Hakuhodo Inc. corporate learning facility, and Yukai Engineering Inc. have jointly developed a concept model for Paby(Parent & Baby Cam), a mechanism that allows parents to communicate with their infants remotely by smartphone.
Paby was developed in a collaboration between DeAL (planning) and Yukai Engineering (product development) with the hope of supporting and strengthening family communication between working parents and their infants. In recent years, the number of households in which both parents work has reached 60% in Japan. Other nations, both developed and developing, have also seen a similar trend. Whilst physical distance has become less and less significant to the way we work, the distance between parents and their babies has come into focus.
DeAL and Yukai Engineering hope to utilize technology—the same technology that connects businesses in this global world—to connect parents and their babies. Messages are sent to parents’ smartphones when their baby cries. Parents can remotely observe and respond to their baby, via cameras attached to the mobile device next to their child, and they can play and interact with their baby, activating toys attached to the mobile using an app on their smartphone. The developer of Paby said “We were motivated to develop Paby because of our own real experiences as working parents. For parents who can only see their baby’s sleeping faces, as they’re too busy to get home early... We know how parents miss their babies whilst they are at the office.”
