Shelina Janmohamed, director of consumer equality at Ogilvy Consulting UK, has been awarded the prestigious Adam Smith Grand Prix at WPP’s 2023 Atticus Awards.
The accolade, open to all agencies across the WPP network, recognises the group’s best original published thinking on issues and trends shaping the industry, business, and wider society.
Shelina was awarded for an opinion piece following 2022’s WPP Consumer Equality Equation report, of which she was the lead author on in conjunction with Ogilvy Consulting and GroupM.
The research, conducted by AV Group and Choreograph, is the most comprehensive study into the relationship between ethnicity, the consumer experience in the UK and potential business growth opportunities. It was funded by WPP’s Racial Equity Programme and Ogilvy Consulting.
Shelina Janmohamed, director of consumer equality said, “This is an incredible accolade that follows a huge piece of work with our Consumer Equality Equation report. But it’s just the beginning.
"Minority Ethnic consumers are still rightly expecting brands to show up for them and represent them fairly. This recognition only furthers my ambition to ensure all brands see consumer equality not just as wishful thinking, but as an invaluable growth metric in their business.”
Shelina used the study in her piece to address how brands can play their part in pushing for racial equality by building better experiences for Minority Ethnic consumers.
The Adam Smith Grand Prix is one of just two awards. The other – the New Talent Award – goes to WPP talent with five or less years in the industry. Ogilvy UK’s junior PR creative Taylor Orford was shortlisted in for her piece on how brands can use subcultures to authentically connect with gen z.
The Atticus Awards are judged by a panel of senior leaders within WPP.
