Artist Carlos Regazzoni finds inspiration in new Boca jersey for Summer 2013
Boca Juniors goes beyond sports limits, and Nike encourages the soccer club to become a leading character in different fields. For purposes of presenting the new Boca Juniors Summer jersey, Nike invited the renowned artist Carlos Regazzoni, who found inspiration in the new design and his passion for the “Xeneize” (Italian dialect, Genoan) club, to create an artwork through his artistic look.
Regazzoni made an art intervention in a mural piece consisting of boxes containing the first 306 jerseys of the new Nike model to be worn by the Riverside team in the next Summer Soccer Tournament. In this great artwork, made on the box lids, one can see the image of La Bombonera stadium.
“When they proposed that I should create and paint a packaging design for the new Boca Juniors jersey, the first thing that came up to my mind was the following: Let’s develop something iconic, an aerial view of La Bombonera stadium with all its people, the “Bosteros” (generic insult, the lowest of the low; literally, manure dealers), in full flow. I have bet on stressing the pride of soccer fans, which I call “The People’s Hug”, Regazzoni stated.
Once the artwork was completed, it was divided into 306 small art pieces, unique and unrepeatable, identified by a single number beside the artist’s signature. Additionally, inside the boxes, and together with the new Boca Juniors jersey, 4 postcards made by the artist were included: One telling the soccer club history, two giving an account of the inspiring sources and techniques for doing the artwork, and a fourth one referring to the features of the limited-edition Summer jersey.
The Jersey
The jersey design features the same technology innovations applied to the jersey models usually worn by the Riverside soccer team. The jersey was wholly made of recycled polyester from plastic bottles, and it was manufactured in Argentina.
“Nike’s idea of changing the color of the jersey seems bright and fantastic to me. No doubt, this is a great challenge. Everyone knows that Boca Juniors jersey is yellow and blue; but now the time is ripe for a change, there are young people claiming for and deciding on such change”, Regazzoni stated, celebrating the new Boca Juniors Summer jersey.
The new jersey will cost $649, and it will be available as from January 11, at Unicenter, Dot, Abasto, Plaza Oeste, Alto Avellaneda, Galerías Pacifico, Mar Del Plata, Maxi, Portal, Rosario shopping center stores, as well as Stockcenter Cabildo and Open Sports Premium multi-brand retail stores.
A Silk-Screen Print of the Soccer Player
Regazzoni made a limited silk-screen printing production of 306 units. Each piece was numbered and personally signed by the artist, and printed on 160 gram Witsel paper. “I wanted to symbolize the soccer player, his energy, his play, and his passion. It is a simple sketch, representational and easy to understand. I regard a soccer player as if he were infinite movement”, the artist stated.
