Los Angeles-based editorial company Therapy Studios liquefies the power and precision of a Ferrari into the latest Motorola model in the sleek new :30 “Combustion”, for Nextel out of TBWA Teran. “Combustion” cuts between a Nextel Motorola phone formulating mid-air with water molecules and a Motorola-branded Ferrari racing across and open speedway. As the car and the fantastical phone collide, they dramatically merge mid-air to create the new Smartradio Motorola i867 Ferrari Special Edition.
Therapy’s Doobie White masterfully edited the footage and crafted the sound design to bring the dreamlike spot vividly to life. To highlight the dichotomy of the auto and water elements, White utilized slow motion moments in the spot to feature the different audio moods of the colliding matter. Due to the imaginative nature of the spot, and the absence of a musical score, White was free to explore a wide range of audio possibilities. He notes, “It was fun to use sounds that don’t necessarily match the real world. There is a lot more that you can get away with in a fantastical world.”
“Combustion” opens on CG particles of water beginning to form in a black space. We zoom out and see the molecules collecting, morphing into the shape of a mobile phone. We cut to a fire-red Ferrari tearing across the watery speedway, rapidly accelerating towards its destination. Focus intensifies as we intercut between slow motion shots of the liquefied phone and the darting racecar. The speeding Ferrari deftly approaches a suspended water formation circling the translucent phone form and the two entities merge midair. The transformation process commences, eventually producing the sleek, Ferrari-inspired Motorola mobile phone. The spot closes with an image of the phone and the Nextel logo along with the super, “Same inspiration, same spirit. New Smartradio Motorola i867 Special Edition.”
