Skullcandy spotlights the drive and discipline it takes to be a professional athlete with the lifestyle audio brand’s newest campaign, “Push Play” for their new Sport Performance line of headphones. Directed by Tim K of Funny or Die’s commercial production division Gifted Youth, the fast-paced spot gives us a glimpse into the music-fueled training routine of Cleveland Cavaliers all-star point guard Kyrie Irving.
Gifted Youth brought on frequent collaborator Therapy Studios to handle multiple aspects of post for the project. Acclaimed editor Doobie White expertly times slow motion moments that explode into real-time action, underscoring the juxtaposition of Kyrie’s stillness - the quiet before the storm - with the aggressive motion of his workout regimen.
A spot for Skullcandy wouldn’t be complete without the best possible sound behind it. Therapy sound designer Eddie Kim makes visible the audio power of the Skullcandy headphones as ambient strobes intensify the heated pace, culminating in Kyrie’s final drive to the hoop. The voiceover clinches the cinematic final frame, affirming, “Without the push, you don’t get to play,” as Kyrie reaches new heights and nails a monster dunk.
