Brand engagement firm match action has named Steve Sanders its Vice President of Development, giving the longtime marketing leader responsibility for business development and prospecting for the agency’s lifestyle and entertainment clients.
Sanders, who begins his new role today, brings more than 20 years of experience in advertising and brand management as a business strategist, creative thinker, brand builder and team leader. He has extensive expertise with brand categories that include online travel, sports and broadcasting, consumer health care, housewares, automotive, financial services, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
“Steve could not be better suited for this assignment,” said Howard Rubin, president of match action. “His impressive record of business successes affirms that he knows what brands need – as well as how to best tap an agency’s resources to serve them. We are excited to have him on our team.”
Sanders joins match action from The Martin Agency, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President, Group Account Director. Over a decade at the Richmond, Va.-based agency, Sanders led the teams that pitched and won more than $27 million in new business with Nespresso, Expedia.com, ESPN, Fuze Beverage, Cruzan Rum, and MGD and Miller Lite.
Sanders was chief architect and leader of the agency’s account management leadership school, a member of the management team overseeing its talent and development, and a graduate of its senior account management MBA program. Outside The Martin Agency, Sanders shared his insight as a guest lecturer both at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and the William & Mary Mason School of Business. He also was an adjunct professor of applied brand management at the VCU Brandcenter Graduate School of Advertising.
During the 10 years before that, Sanders worked in New York for Lowe, TBWA Chiat/Day, Lowe & Partners/SMS and Wells Rich Greene BDDP. At Lowe, he managed all domestic aspects of Sprite advertising within a global grand platform and won a Coca-Cola Company award for “Most Innovative Public Relations Initiative.”
Sanders is a graduate of the Hyper Island Master Class in executive education, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Delaware.
“match action blends the online and offline worlds with strategically smart and incredibly engaging moments of brand play for consumers,” Sanders said. “I’m excited to be a part of such a great team, and I look forward to helping the agency continue to grow and expand into new categories.”
