Manners McDade’s Sam Thompson Releases Debut EP 'As Now the Light Retreats'

Manners McDade composer Sam Thompson is releasing his debut EP 'As Now the Light Retreats' on all digital platforms on 24th June. The title track and second single from the EP will be released on Thursday 10th June.

Sam Thompson is best known for his work, including composing and orchestration, for some of the UK’s best known film and TV titles including Sex Education, Mayor and The A List. He has also written and conducted arrangements for artists such as The xx, Betsy, Ellie Goulding, Biffy Clyro, Lady Leshurr, JW Ridley, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Jenny Plant, Freddie Mercer, The Tomicks and The People The Poet, as well as conducting The Heritage Orchestra for Anna Calvi at the Burberry Fashion Show.

As Now the Light Retreats EP is a deeply emotive and personal collection of pieces that shows confidence in vulnerability from this debut artist. Vintage synthesisers shimmer under lush strings and layered vocals in a body of work that describes euphoria, vulnerability and tenderness.

The single is an electronic, experimental and reflective offering with Sam’s beautiful and arresting vocals echoing around sumptuous synth chords and ever-increasing drama punctuated with drum hits, before pulling back into pensive quietude.

When asked about the writing process Sam explains: "This period, even before the pandemic, has been a time of reflection on past, present and future. I’ve found myself going over my life; what I would have done differently, whether I would change anything. And looking forwards too, excited for my future with my partner Jules, and seeing friends and family.

"I’ve always had a very positive outlook on life but as I get older my optimism is more often tempered by my anxieties and fears. I understand that I, and the people I love the most, are more vulnerable in life. With this release, I am exposing that more fearful, personal and closely guarded part of myself. Which makes me feel… very vulnerable.”

The beautiful artwork is by Sam’s father, Simon Thompson: “Working with my dad was one of the loveliest things. I’ve always loved his eye for photography and I think these photos are some of his best. I love the stories you can see in the flower, that are some of his best. Flowers are such an obvious metaphor for life, with their brevity and beauty, but it felt so apt.”

This astonishing debut is a powerful body of work and as Sam’s explains “As Now the Light Retreats works as an allegory for two competing outlooks in my mind, but as I hope is clear from the record, more often than not, excitement, love and euphoria win through”.
