A choreographed exploration of the subconscious, Half Alive’s music video for ‘Subliminal’ created by m ss ng p eces director Isaac Ravishankara uses dance as the vehicle for nonverbal expression.
Choreographed by Jillian Meyers and captured by cinematographer Drew Bienemann, the often joyful and energetic performance reveals the story of a couple on the verge of a breakup, contrasting against the song’s pop beats, and stripped down set design. The entire video takes place, subliminally, within that moment of the final embrace.
“I’ve long been fascinated by the subconscious, and the fundamental ways our minds and bodies are mostly working outside of our control,” said Isaac. “When Josh Taylor from Half Alive approached me about collaborating on this project, we wanted to answer the question – what would it feel like to choreograph a duet between two people, where many other people represent the subliminal mind? Josh dedicated so much of himself in the weeks of development and rehearsal to be able to execute such a tightly choreographed piece while singing the entire time. I couldn’t be more thrilled about how the project turned out.
Isaac’s aesthetic inspiration was Japanese kuroko stagehands, wearing all black against a black background to “disappear” as they control puppets or people. This contemporary take was in collaboration with Industry of All Nations, who provided the entire wardrobe for the video.
