Lucy Walker Directs a Serene 'City Symphony' for Qualcomm and The New Yorker

The New Yorker and Qualcomm commissioned filmmaker Lucy Walker to create a cinematic homage to the summertime magazine cover by illustrator Christoph Niemann of a woman who drops her mobile phone into a pool. It was twenty years ago that Qualcomm connected the phone to the Internet, forever changing our lives. Today, it’s a constant companion to our daily adventures.

Walker’s filmic ode, 'City Symphony', captures the compelling and beautiful parade of humanity set against the shimmering deep and concrete edgeways of Hamilton Fish Pool. A striking WPA project that opened in 1936, the pool welcomes swimmers, splashers, and sun worshippers of all ages and backgrounds.

Dedicated to the New York city park staff, volunteers and users, Walker’s lovingly depicted day in the life of New York is fittingly set to the vibrato contralto of Marian Anderson’s 'Oh! What a Beautiful City', a voice that entertained and raised awareness for equal rights. Director Lucy Walker is represented by Merman for branded content and other advertising projects.
