At the heart of Limehouse is a collaborative spirit. It determines how Limehouse works, with its core of experts and circle of freelance specialists that it can call on to build the best team for any project. It shapes Limehouse’s home, with its hub of freelance desks and a system that allows them to plug in remotely or in the office. And it’s social. Limehouse likes to be around creative people. That’s why it is hosting next year’s Creative Circle events.
The freelance hub is a win-win for both the Limehouse core team and the freelancers who use it. Ideas get shared and some freelancers get to work with Limehouse’s core experts. “At the moment our production hub includes two editors, an animator and a motionFX specialist renting longer term, while the other desks have been used by photographers and directors, flame artists, VFX artists and designers,” explains managing director, Duncan Harriss. “Of course, they are free to use the facilities however they like, but the share gives back a little more too. It’s buzzy, we’re all learning off each other, ideas spark and it has led to some cool collaborations.”
This year, Limehouse has invested a lot of time - and over $100k - into its infrastructure to support its unique office. The brief was to make Limehouse a place where everyone wants to work and where everyone can work well. All of its platforms were integrated so that anyone, core or casual, can plug in wherever they are working. Limehouse boosted its TV and motion workflows - edit, grade, animation and FX. It upgraded its edit suite, network and internet capacities, CGI render farm and tech stack, and is building out its colour workflow to support ACES. In the spirit of collaboration, there are always free drop-in desks available. The longer-term rental desks partially fund Limehouse upgrades and help the studio to provide the most up-to-date casual workspace possible. These are open to any creatives working in production or post.
“Meeting new talent directly feeds into how we work, so whether we are working with them on projects or they are joining us in studio, it helps us keep the work fresh,” Duncan says.
“Having like-minded creatives in the same space makes for great and geeky conversations work and play related,” added James Lucas, Limehouse creative director and partner. “I've personally worked on Limehouse projects with three of the guys in our studio, who've also opened my mind to music genres I didn't even know existed."
If you’d like to get to know Limehouse first, come to the Creative Circle events in 2022. To launch the first one with a bang, Limehouse is throwing in its 10th birthday celebration budget too. Everyone in the industry is welcome.
“Our Creative Circle events’ open door policy mimics how we work,” Duncan explains. “We do our best work with others, so just as we welcome working with people who share our passion, at these events everyone is welcome to join, share a drink, a chat, and share their passion for what they do. We already work with other production companies as well as freelance talent, so whether we have worked with you or not (yet) you will be welcome.”
