From music composition and experiential sound to production, casting and more, discover the Soho sound studio’s multifaceted offering

London-based Jungle Studios is well known for its award winning sound design and music for TV, radio, cinema, online, broadcast and more. But these sound specialists have a lot more to offer than just the obvious.

In their guide below, explore the range of facilities and capabilities this highly revered audio post house offers, from music mastery to spatial audio, production expertise, casting support and their latest launch, boutique facility, The Attic.

Casting

To help take some of the pressure off of our client's busy workloads, Jungle offers to help with the whole casting process. Working on tight deadlines and fast turnaround projects is what we're used to! Once we receive the brief and usage details, we get straight to work on finding the right voice and handle all negotiations with agents to meet our client's budget.

Some of Jungle’s casting work includes adaptions for Zurich global campaign covering 11 different languages and a Paramount radio campaign, looking for Irish and English dad and son characters. This project involved kids voice agencies and the different licensing that's involved.

This service is headed up by senior audio producer Coral Clayton, who has spent several years at a high-profile voice agency, building up expert knowledge, connections and a great ear for finding the right voice for the job. Coral is on hand to chat through projects, even at their earliest stages, to give advice and point you in the right direction.

Music Composition

With the disciplines of sound and music so closely intertwined, Jungle’s sound designers Luke Isom, Sean Mahoney, Chris Southwell and Stuart Allen-Hynd all come from musical backgrounds. This comes in especially useful on projects that combine the two crafts as working on both together can really emphasise the tone of a piece.

All our studios at Jungle run the industry standard ProTools Ultimate as well as our superb selection of microphones including a Neumann KU 100 Binaural Head which is exceptional for recording environments with. We have a large selection of virtual music instruments installed on all our machines and recently we also invested in a new composition studio and music creation tools.

All of our composers have access to home setups to enhance our abilities and we additionally offer external session musicians should a project require a solo violinist or more.

Production

Jungle Production is a one-stop shop for productions that require expert support and input across a range of TV genres. The department is headed up by Allan Johnston - a multi award winning TV producer / executive (BAFTA, RTS, Broadcast and International Gold Award) who spent over 20 years at the BBC. He created, wrote, directed and produced the hugely popular Something Special – aka Mr Tumble – as well as many other shows.

One area of particular expertise is children’s animation. Whether it’s repurposing existing animations into UK English, or recording original dialogue, our team offers the following:

- Casting and licencing
- Scheduling
- Directing
- Producing
- Child Health and Safety.

To date, utilising all of the above, we have re-recorded and mixed over 300 episodes for some of Nickelodeon’s premiere titles.

Another area of expertise is creating short films for broadcast or online delivery. We recently worked with Pearson’s Educational Publishing to produce over 60 short films for a worldwide project. The Jungle team devised the concept and then went on to undertake all areas of production including, writing, directing and editing.

And of course, like any production company, we like to create our own content. We are currently working with the BFI on co-funded projects for BBC 3 and BBC Children’s.

We also love working with non-linear content. Our commercial educational apps reached number one in the Educational and Children’s charts for Apple as well as receiving Editor’s Choice. We also devised and created a character set and a series of narratives to be used as interactive entertainment and distraction services in children’s hospitals.

The Attic

In February 2023, we announced the launch of our brand new boutique facility, The Attic. Whilst Jungle’s clients are exclusively commercial, The Attic caters to non-advertising creative producers who need highly creative sound design with the support of a high-end facility - but without the space requirements of a full agency team.

The offering specialises in a wide range of audio work - spanning promos, idents, motion graphics, and music composition, all with the potential to be mixed in 360 spatial formats, with emphasis on flexible ways of both working and billing.

The Attic team - backed by the creative and technical team at Jungle - is headed up by our exceptionally accomplished creative director Chris Southwell, alongside the talents of Sam Carson and Tom Rouse, who already have significant experience of a vast array of recording and sound design. This is bolstered by senior audio producer Coral Clayton’s background as a voiceover agent for casting services.

Experiential Sound Installations

Our offering at Jungle has always been: if it makes a sound, then we can do it. The experiential sound installation service is headed up by senior sound designer Chris Turner and audio specialist Steven Boardman, whose interest in spatial audio has seen Jungle offer numerous immersive experiences for their clients. These jobs require strategic thinking and meticulous planning as well as creative execution and tech know-how.

Chris learned his trade working in live sound as part of a multimedia arts-based charity, before becoming a live music engineer and then a studio-based music engineer/record producer. With diverse audio skills like these, he’s as happy soldering wires and setting up PAs as he is doing foley or sound designing.

Steven also comes from a music background, composing, producing, and engineering his own music, while collaborating with many others. His interest in immersive audio stemmed from wanting to portray sound as it’s actually heard and felt. 15 years ago there wasn’t any software or hardware. So he built, designed, and hacked some together to facilitate this quest.

In the last few years alone the duo have:

- Recced sites and done location records for immersive audio books and podcasts that Jungle has produced
- Overseen the install of a bespoke 360 immersive nonlinear audio and visual presentation room in London and New York, for a large tech company
- Recorded and mixed a 360 video for an indie band at the Union Chapel
- Sound designed, cast and music curated an audio tour for a bespoke website, as well as created the sound for a WebXR component that sits alongside it, for Google Arts & Culture
- Recorded Daisy Ridley for a VR experience set in the Chauvet Cave, France
- Sound designed and mixed a 360-film shot in Timor Leste about sustainable farming
- Sound designed and imagined how cities will sound in the future for a pop-up event
- Consulted on and mixed elements for an Audible Original immersive audio story.
