Josh Osborne Directs Striking Music Documentary 'What Kinda Music'

RadicalMedia director follows multi-dicsiplinary artists Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes in the build up to their latest LP

Josh Osborne Directs Striking Music Documentary 'What Kinda Music'

Today, Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes release ‘What Kinda Music’ – an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date. It comes out on Blue Note Records – one of the most legendary music labels around, and one known for moving the needle of jazz through the decades.

Moving fluidly through sleek electronica, progressive jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Tom and Yussef take you on a journey that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling – a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results which has critics from the likes of Q and NME falling hard for its charms.

There’s more to come still, with Tom and Yussef hosting an online listening party for the record today, as well a documentary offering key insights from the duo as to the germination of this record, by the acclaimed photographer and director Joshua Osborne.

Throughout the film viewers gain an insight into the process of ‘the making of the album’ and learn more about the collaboration of the London based guitarist and drummer. The film also features an exclusive live recorded jam (that isn’t released on the record), alongside never seen before childhood home videos and photos and a brief cameo of their father’s as they cruise around South East London in the back of a Rolls Royce.

Director Josh Osborne said: “I wanted to approach this documentary in a fresh way, so I aimed to create an abstract world that celebrates the music as the main focus, with scenes that flow naturally together as selected tracks from the album play out.”
