Revolver’s Steve Rogers shares ten pieces of work that shaped his career
Group_3646

Steve stumbled into directing after studying graphic design where he designed titles for film and TV. He started his own production company, Revolver in 1998. Steve values the human connection that working in this industry provides, including his business partner, Michael Ritchie.

Steve acknowledges that “filmmaking is a truly collaborative undertaking. You can’t make good work on your own, well, at least I can’t. I need to surround myself with people who are much better than me at what they do. When you manage to find great writing, great production, great cast and people with the conviction to fight for a particular outcome, then it can be a delight.”

NIKE- KEEP THE BALL ALIVE

This was really the first job where I felt I had some control, both from a film making and creative point of view.
Client: Nike  Agency: Publicis Mojo

BOAGS- PURE WATERS

I actually remember this being the first job where I felt comfortable enough to enjoy the process of making it. I also got to work with Micah Walker for the first time.
Client: James Boag’s  Agency: Publicis Mojo

DODGE- FREEDOM

A reminder of the feeling you get when you read a script that is already great and all you have to do is get out of the way.
Client: Dodge  Agency: Wieden+Kennedy, Portland

SCHWEPPES- TUMBLE

This was a massive technical challenge, with its fair share of disasters and failures, but somehow it held together. Ultimately, it was a good lesson in having the confidence to improvise when things aren’t going to plan, which they inevitably do.
Client: Schweppes Agency: Y&R, Melbourne

NIKE-RIPPLE

We shot this in Northern Ireland, and it was like making a short film with friends. I wish they could all be like that.
 Client: Nike Agency: Wieden+Kennedy, Portland

OLD SPICE- ROCKET CAR

It was 53 degrees (127F) in the Kalahari desert with a drunk pyrotechnics team and an absolute pleasure to make with wonderful people. Craig Allen, Matt Sorrell and Nick Morrissey is about as good as it gets.
Client: Old Spice Agency: Wieden+Kennedy, Portland

TOURISM AUSTRALIA- DUNDEE

This was an enormous logistical and political undertaking that also needed to remain absolutely secret which is not an easy feat with a crew of 200.
Client: Tourism Australia  Agency: Droga5, New York

RUSTLERS- 80 YEARS OF TORMENT

Again, this was a great, irreverent script with no money and lots of room to play. I also got to work with David Kolbusz for the first time. He told me he would hate the edit. I don’t think he did.
Client: Rustlers Agency: Droga5, London

AMAZON-BEFORE ALEXA

This was a ridiculously, epic undertaking that was a delight to shoot, apart from the night where our Medieval set burnt down. We shot it anyway, and it was better than it would have otherwise been. A good reminder that if you  roll with what’s in front of you can often get surprising results.
Client: Amazon  Agency: Droga5, London

JOHN LEWIS- THE BEGINNER

Obviously, there was no pressure at all with this one.
Client: John Lewis & Partners. Agency: Adam&eveDBB
