Director Em Weinstein’s latest short film 'In France Michelle is a Man’s Name' has continued its festival run with a slot in the upcoming AFI Fest lineup, revealed today. The 13-minute coming-of-age drama will premiere during the virtual festival, which opens Thursday 15th October and closes Thursday 22nd October. Tickets go on sale today.
In the film, Michael, a young trans man, returns home to the rural American West after years of estrangement from his parents. ‘In France Michelle is a Man’s Name’ explores trans identity, masculinity, and the prices we"re willing to pay for acceptance.
Weinstein has premiered films with a plethora of festivals worldwide, including the Mill Valley Film Festival, Outfest, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and the Cannes Film Festival’s American Pavilion Emerging LGBTQ Filmmakers Showcase, where their project Candace (2017) won Best Film. They have additionally developed and directed theatrical work with companies such as New Georges, the 52nd Street Project, Shakespeare & Company, Glasshouse Lab, Collaboraction, Working Theater, En Garde Arts and the Museum of Ice Cream.
Most recently, they were selected to take part in the lauded AFI Directing Workshop for Women’s Class of 2021 and the latest SHOOT New Directors Showcase.
'In France Michelle is a Man’s Name' premiered at Outfest 2020, where it earned the Grand Jury Prize for Best U.S. Narrative Short.
