In Conversation With Jonathan Durrant

People 48 Add to collection

Jonathan Durrant would rather be surfing in Tahiti. But Isobar caught up with him mid-shred to discuss how his career path led him to become a senior producer in Agency Land

In Conversation With Jonathan Durrant

Back in the day, Jonathan Durrant would have been hard pressed to think of a career that was more exciting than creating surfing documentary films. Now, the Senior Producer shares how his current role is the most interesting job he’s ever had and why being a dad is his superpower.

Q> How would you explain your job to a small child?

Jonathan>  Me: "Hello small child, please don't be afraid. Let me tell you about what I do all day."

Small child: *already bored, turns away to find something more exciting.

Q> Tell us about your favourite project you’ve worked on and why?

Jonathan> I helped create a 10ft diameter giant gold-medal-shaped money box that sat on the back of a truck and drove around Australia to promote Toyota's sponsorship of the Paralympics. It was filled up with coins and money for the athletes. We got the dimensions slightly wrong, and the coins only filled up about 1/10th of it!

Q> How is your job uniquely creative?

Jonathan> "Unique New York, unique New York. A tarantula enjoys a fine chewing gum. The human torch was denied a bank loan. The arsonist has oddly shaped feet." - Ron Burgundy

Q> Tell us about your career path?

Jonathan> I started making surfing documentary films (google: Surfing 50 States, Somewhere Near Tapachula, and Surfing 28 States: India) - then moved into freelance production. Now, here I am in Agency Land.

Q> What advice would you give to your younger self?

Jonathan> Don’t eat that.

Q> What or who inspires you?

Jonathan> My partner of my first documentary, Stefan Hunt at www.stefanhunt.com. He just won a Webby and a BAFTA for his latest short film.

Q> What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had?

Jonathan> Senior Producer at Firstborn! I got paid to say that.

Q> What was your dream job as a child?

Jonathan> I wanted to be a Park Ranger or professional Bird Watcher.

Q> What TV show are you currently binging?

Jonathan> Succession & Ballers

Q> What is your superpower?

Jonathan> Super Dad (I have an almost one year old bundle of never-ending energy, my little girl - Lakey Grace). It takes a super-human effort to entertain my daughter at all times. She takes after me.

Q> Bucket list item?

Jonathan> Surfing in Tahiti

Q> If you could meet someone famous, who would that be?

Jonathan> Steve Irwin - What a legend!

Q> What’s the best compliment you ever received?

Jonathan> That guy behind you is ridiculously good looking!

Q> What is your theme song?

Jonathan> 'Tubthumping' by Chumbawamba (“I get knocked down, but I get up again” - also a great Karaoke song - But not as good as 'Tequila')

Q> One thing that makes you happy?

Jonathan> Anything related to surfing.
