Creative director and board director at Publicis Dublin, Carol Lambert, shares five sentimental Irish ads she considers to be immortal...
I was asked by LBB to choose five ads from Ireland that would be fit for the Immortal Awards. Creative ideas that are timeless are ones that make you ‘feel’ something, communicate a clear message about a brand and execute the idea perfectly through words and pictures. Every piece I’ve chosen connected with me at an emotional level, either as a child or an adult. Immortal work uses every tool available to keep an idea pure and ensure the idea will connect. And with that said, here's a nostalgic selection of Irish ads I consider to be immortal...

Aer Lingus - 'You're Home'

Agency: Peter Owens

This brings back nostalgic childhood memories for me. I remember as a kid seeing this ad on TV and wanting to be an air steward after watching it. The music is emotional and the title 'You’re Home', sums up how we all felt about our national airline during that time. Made by Peter Owens, who were responsible for some great TV work for many years when I was growing up.

Guinness - 'Dancing Man'

Agency: Arks Advertising

I was in The Bleeding Horse pub off Camden Street, when this ad first came on and lots of people stopped to look at it and comment. Throughout the night if it appeared again in a commercial break, people were saying to each other ‘look that’s the ad I told you about, it’s on again!’ I worked in the advertising agency that made this ad - Arks Advertising - and everyone in the agency knew it was going to be popular. It was so different to anything else on air, with just one single pure idea that focussed entirely on the time it took for the pint to settle. It was meant to be a filler ad while a much bigger TV brand ad was being worked on. I think the fact that nobody over-scrutinised this ‘filler ad’, meant it had the creative space, to actually be creative.

Guinness - 'I Believe'

Agency: Arks Advertising

Also made by Arks Advertising. For me, it was one of the best Guinness ads ever made. One single shot with a slow zoom. Beautifully written. Brilliant performance from Stanley Townsend. Every time I see it, I watch it right to the end. A lesson in 'less is more'.

ESB - 'Coming Home'

Agency: Peter Owens

Also made by Peter Owens. Again music plays a huge role in the storytelling. The simplicity of the story and how electricity makes a house a home is so effective. A good reminder that brands that make you ‘feel’ something will be remembered for a long time.

Spar - 'Christmas'

Agency: Publicis Dublin

So this ad was done by my own agency, Publicis Dublin. It was made a few years ago but every time I see it I notice something else. Music choice is everything but it’s also been beautifully art directed.
