Chamberlain Group (CGI) is a global leader in access control solutions with its Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door opener brands and myQ connected technology. The company has been quietly revising its approach to digital, mimicking a rapid-growth tech company in a field entrenched in legacy thinking.

Over the last three years, the 67-year-old company has built the framework for the work it’s doing today, pivoting from hardware focused to smart access solutions paired with a mobile app. It prepared them for the increased demand of their products and services that emerged over the past 10 months with consumers spending more time at home.

Key product stories include:

- The myQ app, lets homeowners control, secure and monitor the garage from their smartphone anytime, from anywhere.

- In-Garage Delivery via Key by Amazon, which allows Amazon delivery drivers to securely place packages inside the garage where they will stay protected against damage, theft and weather.

- myQ Pet Portal, a connected doggie door that  allows pet parents to safely let their dog out to potty and play while they’re away.

Chamberlain Group’s digital product infrastructure has been active for a few years, making the company’s most recent product and marketing updates far simpler to evolve as new products and consumer behaviors emerged. Its investment stands in contrast to businesses that weren’t prepared, and now have far more work to do to catch up.

The difference in CGI’s strategy is in the way the brand treated digital solutions as a growth vehicle for the company. Something that was achieved with help from Chicago-based digital growth consultancy and partner, Vokal. The consultancy believes in delivering growth at any stage of a digital product’s lifecycle, from bringing new products to market to creating engines that repeat and sustain growth through customer acquisition, retention, and engagement.

“Chamberlain Group was poised for this growth long before the pandemic,” said Reid Lappin, Founder and CEO, Vokal. “The lesson is not only to remain flexible as an organization to meet future challenges, but that business strategies rooted in digital are often the avenue that makes that possible. In CGI’s case, the company was able to strategically move digital levers to grow adoption of its solutions in the market.”

“Over the past several years we have worked with Vokal to help us with our efforts to transform from a company that opens doors to one that creates seamless access journeys,” said Tyler Lenczuk, Director of Delivery Services for Chamberlain Group. “We most recently worked with their team to implement A|B testing within our myQ app to drive connections to Key by Amazon and help more myQ users benefit from In-Garage Delivery.”
