How to Grow Your Small Business at Breakneck Speed

Cage Point CEO Shattuck Groome discusses how the agency just ranked no. 44 on the 2020 Inc. 5,000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America

How to Grow Your Small Business at Breakneck Speed
Very recently, Cage Point ranked 44 on the list of Inc. 5,000, a prestigious recognition that is awarded to America’s fastest-growing privately-held businesses. I am very proud of our agency and team to have reached this achievement as a result of the company’s impressive growth rate of 6467.83%.

The Inc. 5000 list rankings are based on the percentage of revenue growth rate. The award is known as a measurement of entrepreneurial success across America, and we value the significance of this acknowledgment as an independent, small business. In reflecting on that, I wanted to share with other small business how this dream became our reality in hopes that it will help other business owners.

I have been in this business for over 20 years; starting up other agencies, selling them, to founding Cage Point in 2016. The Inc. 5,000 award demonstrates that hard work really does pay off. The formula for growth is quite simple:

1) Like Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric, said: “Surround yourself with people smarter than you!”
2) Work hard and know your craft, in and out.
3) If you don’t fail sometimes, then you are not trying to innovate. And you must continuously innovate – especially in today’s climate.

Cage Point joins the Inc. Fastest 5,000 as an analytically focused, media accountable agency. Our business focuses on research, communications planning, and buying across all media channels-advanced analytics and deeply customised technologies tailored to each client’s business objectives. More specifically, these capabilities might include services with CRM, email, display, video, social media, radio, print, TV, influencer, and online merchants. We work on advertising, measuring, and optimising with each service for our clients.

Our philosophy is rooted in the operator’s mentality. We apply a data-driven approach to solving business challenges and to drive profitable growth. For us, this is more than just a process or siloed event; it is an integrated operating system. It is how we construct, manage, and constantly optimise campaigns to help our clients win.

For any client service agency, the philosophy for success is simple. We follow three principals, which are quite different than other media agencies and for us an any agency it’s all about our relationship with clients:

In a Word, Culture
Build a strong culture with your teams – internal and external. You would think our success comes with the fact that we use media to drive business goals – profitably. Or that we can get the best rate for an advertisement and understand the ROI against it. Or, that we are using the most advanced technology solution. However, what I have learned is that business results are only one aspect of the game. For longevity – you need to build a culture and not be afraid to fail. We are a complete extension of their marketing and sales departments. We build custom teams to meet our client’s goals and needs.

So, we truly understand how to operate and address the business objectives. We try to extend our culture to our clients and onto their customers. We are a tight knit family. Every team member knows each other by name. You hear about authenticity and being real – we practice this every day, so we become an extension of our clients marketing teams. This is not a 9-5 job; we are always on call.

Put yourself in your client’s shoes. Unlike other agencies, our clients understand where every media dollar is invested. If a media strategy or tactic is not working – we are the first to raise our hand and say “let’s rethink this.”

Analyse your data, and if you don’t have the right data, don’t be afraid to ask for help, to get the right data. Cage Point takes a different media planning approach which is agnostic to the various media platforms and partners we can align with. I really don’t care which partner or technology we use, as long as it provides results. We have an aggressive stance on Test & Learn approaches. We all know advertising works, but we need to get the answers to which form of advertising, and what’s the correct investment. We have weekly status and reporting, which provides visibility into media investments – whether its TV, radio, out-of-home, paid search, social, programmatic, or any form of digital including Amazon. Our client goals range from awareness to retail sales to lead generation to eCommerce. At the end of the day - We provide a predictive model, with actionable plans, on how to drive profitable and scalable growth – through media and data.

For Cage Point, the most important think about making the Inc. 5,000 list is that it reinforces our dedication to forming true partnerships with our clients and becoming an extension of their marketing team, and not just another vendor. Cage Point’s mission is to help our partners reach their customers in a ‘real’ way that grows their business.

When they win, we win.
