Yarns competition gives entrants a chance to turn ideas into professional short films

After a two-year hiatus, Homespun today launches its renowned short film competition, Yarns.

Looking to uncover the country’s best unsigned talent, Yarns gives entrants the chance to turn their ideas into professional short films.

In association with Kodak and Sling Shot Intergalactic, the not-for-profit competition has helped identify the next generation of directing talent. With past winners going on to enjoy successful careers, it’s become a proven springboard into the industry.

This year will be no different, with a brief that challenges hopefuls to put a new spin on classic stories. Titled ‘Myths’, Yarns is asking competitors to create a five-minute short film, inspired by treasured tales from ancient times, Greek Myths. With a selection of six to choose from, entrants will be asked to take inspiration from the mythical world when creating their own original film. With stories about everything from heroes to villains, there’s plenty for hopefuls to sink their teeth into when creating iconic tales of their own.

Julie Taylor-Butt, senior marketing manager at Kodak said: “At Kodak we’ve always been passionate about supporting new talent, and over the years Yarns has provided a platform for next wave of directors. The competition always produces outstanding short films, and we’re delighted to be sponsoring Yarns again this year. For 2022, we are offering finalists the chance to shoot on 16mm film as well as donating an exciting prize for the winning director.”

Owner of Homespun Editing, Leo King comments: “We’re absolutely delighted that Yarns is back for 2022. After an enforced break, we can’t wait to get started and uncover our next set of directors. Yarns is unique in that it gives our entrants an educational journey, from basic script right through to the final edit and screening event. With the industry’s foremost talent in support, it’s the perfect first-step into the world of film-making”.

Entrants have until 11:59pm on April 22nd 2022 to submit their idea, in the form of a script, storyboard or treatment. Three finalists will be shortlisted, and Homespun will provide £2000 funding, plus production and post production support to make each film from concept to final edit. Finalists will be announced in June, following in-house judging from the entire Homespun team. An awards night will take place in November where the final three films will be screened and winner announced.

The brief can be downloaded myths.yarnsfilm.co.uk with further information about the competition available at yarnsfilm.co.uk.
