DDB Norway duo win ‘Free the King’ with 'Monarchy - Time for Retirement'
Last spring, film production company Hobby Animation, together with the Republican Association of Sweden, announced ‘Free the King’.
‘Free the King’ was a film competition, of which the best idea or contribution to dismiss the Swedish monarchy was rewarded with a commercial. The jury, which consisted of people such as Gudrun Schyman, Mårten Knutsson and Arvid Svanvik, have now chosen their winner – Norwegian DDB creative duo of Julian Hageman and Torkil Jarnholt.
“The monarchy represents continuity with an undemocratic society that otherwise, thankfully, is behind us. I hope that the commercial prompts discussion and more so points out that the monarchy is incompatible with democracy and equality,” says Republican Association chairman Peter Althin.
Kristofer Ström, director at Hobby Animation, created the movie: "I've always been an opponent against injustice and inequality. Monarchy symbolizes just that for me. The fact that the script contained goodies such as slaves, unjustified executions, blood, warts and of course the king, made it a dream job for me." - Kristofer Ström.
The film, ‘Monarchy – Time for Retirement’, is being launched today. The Republican Association hope that it will stimulate debate about the Swedish Royal Family’s future.
