Executive producer at Impossible Studios, Maddy O'Shaughnessy, commemorates adland with five uniquely brilliant works from all-time
After spending a few years on the agency side at Ogilvy, Wunderman Thompson and Momentum (and others) in various production roles, I've finally come back to the production side as executive producer at Impossible Studios. So, being a total ad-nerd, I was just so excited when LBB asked me to pick my five favourite pieces from across the industry. Once you see all five, I think the winner is clear...
IKEA - 'Start the Car'
Agency: Zig
This spot is absolutely iconic. It's one of those spots that just stays with you forever after seeing it. What I love about it is it feels like it could have been a quick scene from your favourite comedy show - but it's an ad! Love this.
Volkswagen - 'The Force'
Agency: Deutsch LA
Production: Park Pictures
Director: Lance Acord
Again, this is one of those spots that just stands the test of time. When I saw that this spot came out nearly 11 years ago, I was floored. It stood the test of time and then some. It's wholesome. It's effective. It's cute af.
No Frills - 'Hauler'
Agency: john st.
Production: Revolver Films
Director: Scott Cudmore
Editorial: Saints Editorial
Post: The Vanity
Colour: Alter Ego
Music: SNDWRx
For those of you who don't know, No Frills is a discount grocery chain here in Canada (and my go to for when we need to get the kitchen stocked). So, to see the team at john st. take a budget grocery chain and make it cool just made me so happy, and now I get to say I shopped at No Frills before it was cool.
Head On - 'Apply Directly to the Forehead'
This one wins. No-one said the ads had to be good...you just asked me to pick my favourites.
Tim Hortons - 'TimBiebs'
Agency: GUT Toronto
Production: Boy In The Castle
Director: Colin Tilley
Editorial: Rooster Post Production
Post: The Vanity
Music: Grayson Music
This one is pretty damn divisive here in Canada. Lots of people don't like Justin Bieber (fools) and Tim's coffee just sucks (face it, it sucks) but this spot and this whole campaign is just so good. The banter between Bieber and the Tim's talent is just so great. She carries the spot, but it just works so well. Adore this and they need to bring TimBiebs back ASAP.
