Global head of strategy, fashion and luxury at Media.Monks, Duncan Gowers, reflects on some of his favourites of this year's campaigns from luxury brands

Fashion and luxury marketing and communication is - to people like me, my colleagues and peers - the pinnacle art form in advertising. Working in this space, you’re consistently striving to create the most meaningful, elegant and elevated work. Here are five examples of the best the industry has to offer...

Louis Vuitton - 'Virgil Was Here'

Agency: Be Good Studios
Production: Clip Pictures LA
Director: Julian Klincewicz

November 2021 saw the passing of Louis Vuitton and Off White creative director, Virgil Abloh. This short film demonstrates the compulsion for adventure and discovery that narrated his life; his unequivocal influence for future generations and his passion for communities. It reminds us that behind every great creative genius, lies a child that once had dreams and aspirations with a legacy to unfold.

Calvin Klein x Palace

Production: Ragi Dholakia Productions
Photographer: Alasdair Mclellan

Masters of collaboration and curation, demonstrating the brand's unparalleled cultural literacy, Palace joins the dots between contemporary streetwear and the definitive 90's fashion brand of Calvin Klein. A clean, refreshing and youthful take on telling the stories of two iconic brands, the campaign video features a tale of two cities, forever connected and perfectly imbued with the distinct humour, cultural nuance and grittiness attributed to the two brands and their respective audiences. Palace's tongue-in-cheek approach and knowing choice of celebrity - apparent in the appearances from Willem Dafoe, the Pet Shop Boys, and Joan Collins - is what makes this partnership so great. It’s a true testament to the effortless capabilities Palace holds in riffing off Calvin Klein’s codes.

Burberry - 'Open Spaces'

Production: Riff Raff Films
Directors: Megaforce

There is no denying that watching this film takes you on a journey from reality to fantasy. The dream-like state in which weightless, choreographed figures dance amongst the natural beauty of the British countryside demonstrates how Burberry once again encourages you to break boundaries and live beyond limits. It’s optimistic, beautifully elegant and poignantly contemporary in execution.

Burberry - 'Unexpected Visibility'

Agency & Production: Media.Monks

Watching this campaign evolve over the past few years has provided a wonderful real life demonstration of how fashion can take inspiration from the world around us while simultaneously making massive strides in sustainability. By merging technology and nature, we created two truly impactful and mesmerising installations that drew focus to the symbiotic relationship between mother nature and humankind.

BMW - 'Nick Knight: The New i7'

Agency: Show Studio

This campaign provided a breath of fresh air in an industry, known for its otherwise formulaic and conventional marketing mannerisms. By implementing artist collaborations such as this one with Nick Knight, BMW has offered a new lens in which to view not only their new i7, but also their brand as a whole - one that is making unexpected strides forward in creativity, electric advancement and in invigorating the automotive industry with a new luxury sensibility.
