Rob Canales, CCO at THE 3RD EYE, looks into five inspiring ads which aim to encourage us to be better

My story of starting out as a physical therapy major at the University of Central Florida and becoming the head creative of a $40 million+, Miami-based agency represents the best of what our industry has to offer - that human connection is what compels brand loyalty. I am a twenty-something CCO looking to redefine health and wellness advertising. I approach my work from the perspective that living longer is all about the quality of life that people can live. I care a lot about wellbeing, fitness and mental health and my work is also my personal ambition to share that with others, regardless of their age...

Garden of Life - 'Poopowerment'

Agency: Humanaut
Director: Yaara Sumeruk

It’s hilarious to me when the things that normal people talk about are censored due to dumb rules and protections. People poop. And while my wife will never let me believe it, women do in fact poop. It’s a thing that we should all be comfortable talking about, especially when it relates to your health. This ad does two things that I love, sell a product that can actually help people and spark a conversation around it. The only downside is the name of the work, which is a stretch of pun, but I’ll take it because it’s probably how they can sneak using the word 'poop' at all...

Hims - 'Be Ready with Kaitlin Olson & Rob McElhenney'

Agency: Maximum Effort

Having convos around things people don’t talk about enough is the sweet spot of advertising. It’s easy to sell something on features or service, it’s another to make people reflect. Hims has always done a great job initiating that conversation amongst men, but this ad is funny in so many ways it’s hard to miss. The copy is littered with puns, the visuals are campy and playing on pharma tropes, and the fake Rob with the Wrexham FC hat is great.

Nike - 'Find Your Greatness'

Agency: Wieden + Kennedy Portland
Production: Park Pictures
Post: Spotwelders
Sound: Lime Studios

Easily one of my favourite spots of all time. No product, just straight up motivation. This ad gave me enough chills that it literally made me reconsider becoming a physical therapist so that I could build ads like this.

Nike - 'Make It Count'

Director: Casey Neistat

The idea of using the Nike Fuelband to track your daily performance and flipping the product to a call to action is what I live for. Putting aside my love for Casey, pushing people to make it count - what 'it' is - is genius. I bought and wore the fuelband for way longer than I should’ve because I kept going back to this spot. The right ones will do that for you.

Arizona - 'Donald Glover’s Atlanta: Episode Seven' Parody Ad

Creator: Donald Glover

An in-universe integration within one for the greatest shows ever created alone is enough to talk about this spot. But the fact that it taps into a human conversation and uses humour sell the product is genius. This does a lot for me. It’s embedded natively unto the viewer experience, it’s clever and comments on the confusion around the price, and it’s honestly just simple. There’s a lot of production in spots that don’t need all that flair. This gets to the point and gets you to laugh.
