For the second year in a row, La Tomatina, Spain’s annual tomato-throwing festival, is on hold. The cancellation is bad news for local farmers who typically supply tomatoes to the festival. Not to mention the thousands of disappointed travellers whose dreams of tomato throwing were dashed. Again.
A Spanish tradition since 1945, La Tomatina will be back with a bang. In the meantime, Heinz is showing its support for local farmers across the country by turning tasty Spanish tomatoes into a limited edition Heinz Tomatina ketchup. Supported by a corporate donation to Spanish agriculture, this is yet another example of the company's confidence and commitment to local agriculture, which in the last year alone has increased the purchase of tomatoes from Spanish producers by 50%.
Sure, we can’t throw tomatoes this year. But there’s always ketchup to keep the spirit of the festival alive.
"For us as a company it is essential to generate a positive impact on local communities through our activity and production," says Elisenda Picola, marketing director of Heinz Spain. "For this reason, we are very proud to be able to help the development of Spanish agriculture, as well as all the households that dedicate their day to day to cultivating a product 'as ours' as the tomato."
The limited run, special edition batch of ketchup features a custom Tomatina label and will be available soon.
