Has Streaming Made the UK Singles Chart Boring?

Has Streaming Made the UK Singles Chart Boring?

Since 2014, the Official UK Singles Chart has included streams as well as sales figures in their statistics. As streams become ever more predominant over downloaded songs, it means we now have a chart that reflects how people listen to music, rather than the new tracks they are buying.

This means the same songs stay in the chart for weeks and weeks on end - a stagnant pool of ‘non-movers’, and major artists like Bieber and Ed Sheeran can completely dominate. For example in this week’s UK singles chart update; Ed Sheeran is at numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16,17, 18 and 21…  That’s ludicrous!  And all rather boring.  There are in fact only 5 tracks that aren’t Ed Sheeran in the top 20!

I have nothing personal against these acts, who are very talented; but for music fans it can be frustrating as it means new, interesting music and acts can be ‘locked out’ of the charts, which prevents them from getting a wider appreciation and recognised for what they’re truly worth.

Being music lovers, over these past few years, my partner and I have instead turned our back on this chart and dedicated time, once a week, to go through all of the new music that has been released, and to handpick our favourite tracks by both new and established acts, to create our own personal playlist that we like to listen to over the week.

It has been a real eye-opener for us to discover the range of talent that is currently out there, most of which isn’t getting the attention we think it deserves.

So every week, we’d like to share our current playlist with you. We hope you enjoy, and discover some new and exciting music yourselves!
