IKO PLC, the UK's market leader in roofing and waterproofing systems, is launching a unique felt roof repair kit product to the DIY market. Greenwich Design, part of the Greenwich Design Group, created the branding and packaging for the IKOpro Emergency Felt Roof Repair Kit which provides an economical, quick and easy solution to repairing damaged roofs in a self contained pack.
The current alternative for damaged roofing usually results in consumers having to purchase expensive rolls of felt or to re-roof entirely. Greenwich Design were briefed to design a simple and effective pack that would be appealing to those looking for an emergency roofing solution and would encourage even the most novice of DIY enthusiasts that making repairs to a felt roof can be quick, simple and convenient.
Greenwich Design created a compact, self-sealing pack - in a similar style to a bicycle puncture repair kit – which neatly encases all of the items required for a quick roofing fix against the elements, while ensuring waterproofing and weather protection remains intact. The bold orange and black colours in the branding and packaging design were used to create instant awareness, with a large text font in red and black highlighting the ‘emergency’ solution and making clear exactly what the repair kit offers. The large IKOpro logo is instantly recognisable, helping build trust in the new product through IKO’s association with quality roofing systems.
To aid with ease of use, Greenwich Design created three simple, easy to follow illustrations along with a four-step set of instructions which can be seen on the back of the packaging. The packaging also needed to appeal to the trade market and reflect the niche proposition being offered to them – the ‘quick fix’ kit with a pricing point considerably lower than alternatives – that they could envisage rolling out across stores and merchants.
As part of the process, Greenwich Design were responsible for sourcing the plastic casing in which the items would be held, liaising with the felt manufacturer and cutting forme production company who were used to create the felt patches in the exact shape required. They also created a prototype of the product packaging that was used to aid conversations with suppliers and retailers when the kit was in its initial stages.
Vincent Bernard, Product Marketing Manager at IKO PLC, comments: “The IKOpro Emergency Felt Roof Repair Kit has been an exciting project for us all to work on. It is something very different to our usual offering and allows us to demonstrate our commitment to investing in new solutions across all aspects of the market to meet our customer needs. The idea for the repair kit came from an IKO employee, and it has been great for him to be involved with Greenwich Design in every part of taking the concept to market.
We have been working with Greenwich Design for a number of years and chose to partner with them for this venture as they have the company knowledge, a real passion for design and the agency also understand how to commercialise ideas into something retailers want to stock on their shelves.”
Simon Wright, managing director at Greenwich Design, comments: “It has been great to be involved in the Emergency Roof Repair kit from the initial idea conception, seeing what is required at each stage of the process. It has been a really fun project and the idea is so unique, I’m sure it will be popular with DIY hopefuls!”
The IKOpro Emergency Felt Roof Repair Kit can be used to repair garages, sheds, outbuildings, kennels and hutches and is currently available at selected Wickes DIY stores and online www.wickes.co.uk as well as direct from IKOpro www.ikogroup.co.uk
