Music tech, sound design and music production graduates climb the ladder

Grand Central Recording Studios has announced the promotion of three up and coming sound superstars.

Rachel Scott and Tom Keats, formally head runner and runner respectively, have been promoted to trainee junior transfer engineers. Stephen Davies has been promoted to head runner.

Rachel Scott - promoted to trainee junior transfer engineer

Rachel has a BEng in Electronic Engineering with Music Technology Systems and a Master’s degree in Post Production Sound Design for Film and TV from The University of York. She joined GCRS as a graduate runner in December 2018 and was promoted to head runner in February 2020.

Rachel says: “I'm very excited to be joining Miles, Lizzy and Tom in the Transfer Department and taking on a more technical role at GCRS. The team is fantastic and I look forward to learning as much as I can from everyone. My goal is to assist the Sound Designers on projects and continue my progression at the company.”

Tom Keats - promoted to trainee junior transfer engineer

From a young age Tom considered himself a musician, playing guitar and producing music on his laptop. He studied Music Technology at the University of Kent where he had the resources and opportunities to produce music, perform live and start working on Sound Design projects. He joined GCRS as a graduate runner in September 2018.

Tom says: “The Transfer Bay is an important step and learning opportunity in the direction of where I want to go. With the studio facilities and wealth of knowledge here at GCRS I know this will be a great experience propelling me forward in my goal of ultimately becoming a Sound Designer. Hopefully in the coming months, Covid permitting, I can pick up some short films and personal projects that I can sink my teeth into working in the studio.”

Stephen Davies – promoted to head runner

Stephen has always been musical and moved to London to study Music Production majoring in film & TV composition and Sound Design at BIMM London. After three years working in live sound, he joined GCRS in 2019 as a runner.

Stephen says: “I started my career working front of house at major music festivals and touring with bands. I developed my love for composing and sound design so being at GCRS has really helped me progress and build on my skills and passion for sound.”

Carole Humphrey, MD at Grand Central Recording Studios, commented: “I’m delighted to start the year with some very good news. GCRS couldn’t continue to exist without the fresh talent that comes through our doors. We have always encouraged young talent and we’re carrying on with this policy, pandemic or no pandemic. Every GCRS team member brings a different perspective and the junior teams are at the forefront of innovative sound design. Rachel, Tom and Steve are passionate about sound and bring music production and composition talent to the table as well as sound design skills. They have a great understanding of technology. I’m looking forward to seeing them furthering their careers as part of the future of GCRS.”
